FRANK SKVAREK
Frank is one of only two Club charter members (Wally Krull is the other) During the
early years of the Club Frank was also involved in forming what is now the track and field club. He was the de facto coach. As an offshoot of the track club he organized a competitive racewalking group and was coach/competitor.
Frank was a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne assigned to the MP detachment and after leaving the Army. He and two other guys formed a skydiving club outside Buffalo, NY where he then lived. Skydiving was a relatively new sport in those days.
And talk about unique, he is the only survivor of the first official police S.W.A.T. team in the U.S.
While assigned to the MP”s he was awarded a commendation for bravery in the line of duty by the Army in his handling of an incident while patrolling the streets of Fayetteville, NC. He knew then he was suited for police work. Frank’s career was as a patrolman then a detective and always assigned to what is referred to as the “high crime” section of the city. During his career he received several awards for performance. In one of his confrontations he was stabbed in the chest while saving the life of a year old child. But he enjoyed that action in his job. Nearly every tour of duty was busy. Not every call was a danger. In his 8 years of patrol he delivered 4 babies. Only had to cut the cord once, they just popped out most off the time, he says.
Frank has been involved in amateur sports for at least 40 years. He has done marathons, bicycle racing, javelin, track and field ,etc. He has two pole vault records in the Empire State Games (NY) Both set when he was in his 50’s. He is the only Floridian with back to back records in archery in the World Senior Games.
Frank was an avid gun shooter before he came to The Villages but was seeking a new challenge an that
was Archery. He is self taught as there were no role models or examples in his style. He became quite proficient and has guided more than one student to a state championship. One of them has a standing record.
Many of you know Frank as a knowledgeable , personable, and likeable guy who never turned down anyone seeking help.
One more thing, Frank produced, directed, choreographed and scripted an almost famous photo/poster
Which promotes archery by asking, “looking for a new sport? Expose yourself to archery!!”
(See Below)
Now you know a bit more about the guy with the barebow wearing a tam backward there on the line.
Frank has decided to “hang up the bow” and has returned to track and field and has added lawn bowling
To his sports resume. He says “there is life after archery”
The following is a list of some of Frank’s archery records as a member of the Villages Archery Club.
They are listed in chronological order and half have been surpassed but the others still stand,
Including the 2010 World Senior Games record.
