In the 1980s, Rod was into bass fishing and participated in tournaments of local Delaware Bass Fishing clubs and the Delaware Bass Federation. He eventually became Secretary of the Delaware Bass Federation and President of the DuPont Bassmaster’s club.
In the 1990s, Rod got interested in shotgun shooting sports of Trap, Skeet and Sporting Clays. He participated in the National Sporting Clays Association (NSCA) tournaments and reached the level of AA and Masters Class. He became a board member of the DuPont Gun Club.
After Y2K Rod gave up all sports to manage the health care of his elderly parents. After the passing of his parents, Rod and his wife Rachel moved to the Villages in 2009. Rod got back into NSCA Sporting Clay tournaments but in 2012 he decided to try out archery in The Villages. He became involved in the general maintenance of The Villages Paradise Archery range for club activities and along with other club members developed the current Target Fames and Target Anchoring System along with other improvements. Rod eventually became VP and President of The Villages Archery club and the rest is history.

Some of Rod’s accomplishments:
- Worked with The Villages to replace the deteriorating club provided Larry Boyd Memorial bench at no additional cost to the club
- Managed to move the purchase of non-club related target faces to The Villages Recreational Department resulting in considerable yearly savings for the club.
- Set new records (and broke his own records) in 300, 600, and 900 club leagues and tournaments
